Singapore Hotel Guide & Local Info

Singapore is known as the most surveilled city in the world due to the number of video cameras throughout the city outside of public and commercial buildings, ATMs, and other buildings. Singapore is known as both a technological and financial powerhouse of Asia. The small country gained its independence from Malaysia in 1965, and since then the tiny city-state has gone from a poor trading port to one of the wealthiest states in the world.

Singapore’s Esplanade neighborhood is home to a 15-acre (six-hectare) performing arts center, the Esplanade Mall, and two outdoor performing venues. Inside the Esplanade’s sleekly designed concert hall is an orchestral platform that holds up to 120 musicians, a reverberation chamber used to alter the hall’s acoustics, and a 4,470-pipe organ. The Singapore Botanical Gardens, built in 1859 and spanning 128 acres (51 hectares), are a popular spot for locals to stroll, jog, or practice tai chi.
