Venice Hotel Guide & Local Info
Venice is located in northeastern Italy and is made up of a group of 118 small islands called “Sestieri” which are connected by canals and linked by bridges. Some of the buildings are supported by underwater support structures made of wood and concrete pilings. The main Sestieri are the Cannaregio, Castello, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Santa Croce and San Marco, where the main monuments and sights are located. Other main districts are Isola Della Giudecca and Lido di Venezia. Other important islands include Murano, Torcello, San Francesco del Deserto and Burano.
When it’s raining there are lots of mosquitoes and flies because of all of the stagnant water. Unfortunately the Acqua alta (high water) has become a fact of life in Venice. The lagoon water level occasionally rises above the level of the squares and streets, flooding them.
Sometime between the Spring and fall is probably the best time of the year to visit Venice because it’s a compromise between both the temperature and the tourist load. Weather during the winter months can be somewhat cold, windy, and damp. Many of the Italian cities in the summer are hot and full of vehicle smog, but Venice has no cars and the proximity to water tends to create a slightly cooler atmosphere.
